Consultant Agency Off and Running: Business

Consultant Agency Off and Running

Tags: Business | Written on 16/9/08

I have been operating as a small consulting agency for my clients lately. Here is what has been happening:

  1. Client seeks out my work.
  2. We begin a working relationship.
  3. Client needs more work done, so I find another worker.
  4. I remain point of contact, but bill client for worker's time and my time to get more done.

This is pretty simple, but works out well.  The client only needs to go through one channel of communication does not have to worry about the work getting done, because I can hire up for what the client needs.

The truth is, most clients are not able to find the right people to work with.  Since I have worked both in corporations and also in open source, I know a strong network of people.  This also saves the client overhead of finding the right people for the job.  They can rely on the work that I will deliver.

This has been a great shift of focus and I am privileged to be providing people jobs through my clients while being able to deliver more work than before.

This is completly true. Currently I've a big problem to solve: hire the right workers. Today is very difficult find attributes in a good level or FIND people interesting to work with web. Here in Curitiba (Brazil), mostly of workers don't able to get upgraded job: When I offer a good salary (better than his company), my company instantly get into a auction: His company offers a salary better than my company offer and the fight has started. Not so good, because, today good workers are already employed. I Really appreciate if I could find good workers without fights of salary/interests. Today in web fields, we have a low demand of GOOD workers, so this fights is everyday. This is bad. I'll find out a solution to this problem!

You have made the shift from "owning a career" to "owning a company." If you have to do all the work yourself, then you only have a job. When you can employ/contract others to do work for you, then you become an business owner, an investor, and an entrepreneur.

I am very excited for you Marc, I can't begin to tell you about how great of an experience it is to run a business, and at that a growing one. Granted, there are going to be many challenges along the way, but the rewards and freedom it provides are more than any career could ever provide, and its just fun. I know you have a good network of business persons to help you along the way so keep up all the great work.
